  1. Brian was a good friend of my late husband, Leo Pyle. They collaborated together on a book about Catholicism and Methodism, published under the title Dissent and Descent. (Epworth Press)
I first met Brian in what to me were embarrassing circumstances – we were living in Dorking and expecting our first child. One evening Leo was late home. Scantily dressed, and very pregnant, I had lain down on the hearthrug to practise my breathing techniques for the birth, and had fallen asleep. Suddenly the living room door opened and Leo ushered in Brian, saying he’d travelled back with him on the train from a meeting in London and offered him a meal and a lift home! Later, Brian became the Godfather of our third child, our daughter Catherine.
Brian was a kind and conscientious godfather, and kept in close touch with Catherine and with us. We have picked blackberries in his garden many times; and Brian stayed with us frequently in both Henley and Ambleside. We shall miss his frequent re-used envelopes containing copies of his latest poems!
